Howard Brothers Discount Stores

Howard Brothers Discount Stores (informally known as Howard Brothers and Howard's) was a chain of discount stores in the Southeastern United States. The chain was founded in 1959 by Alton Howard and W.L. "Jack" Howard.[1] In 1986, the now 87-store chain was later purchased by Wickes. It had stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.[2] The HBD management attempted a buyout in 1986, but was unsuccessful.[3] Later years, it fell on hard times due to the rise of Wal-Mart, and dissolved circa 1986.
